Large Format Scanning

Large format scanning is the perfect means of archiving a bigger document or film set.

Almost every company is moving forward with the transition from paper documents, to computer files.  This makes storage easier, cheaper, and makes accessing the files much more convenient.  Plus computer storage is more environmentally friendly, requiring fewer resources to produce, and also creating less trash from old documents being thrown away.  This requires the use of a scanner, but the average scanner isn’t always big enough to accommodate every file or picture that you may have.  That’s where large format scanning comes in extremely useful.

Large format scanning is achieved by using a scanner that is much larger than average.  These are specially made to accommodate large documents or pictures, and even historical relics.  As everyone makes the switch to digital information, these come in handy for preserving the records of the past in a new medium.  A large format scan is especially useful for storing those documents and photographs that don’t easily fit into your current filing system, even if you aren’t converting to digital storage. Large format film scanning can even archive film for you.

The average scanner surface is usually around 12×18 inches.  This is fine for most documents, and small photographs.  But if you have much larger files that need to be converted, large format document scanning is required.  The typical size of this type of scanner is 34×36 inches, which means you have a lot more surface area to record a huge document.  This is useful for massive pictures in your collection, as well as huge documents like graphs which can tend to be on the very large size.  The only downside is that large format scanning prices aren’t cheap.

Large format scanners tend to be very expensive, usually in the thousands of dollars range.  Also they take up a lot of space.  Unlike a standard scanner which can fit on almost any desk top.  A large format scanner is usually it’s own appliance, and comes on a cart so that it can be wheeled from place to place.  Because of their massive size and price, they aren’t practical additions to a home or business, unless you’ll be regularly scanning large documents.  But rather, you’ll want to employ a large format scanning service, to have the items professionally converted to digital files for you.

Large format scanning can still be expensive, even when using a professional service.  The average document that requires a large format scanner, also requires more care on the user’s part, in order to properly scan the item.  This makes the process more costly than a standard document which doesn’t require special care.  Prices differ from store to store, but on average where a normal document costs a few cents to scan, larger format items will cost a few dollars.

To find a store in your area you should use a search engine like Google.com.  Usually there will be a variety of local companies that offer large format scanning services and wide format scanners for sale.  Otherwise you can try big outlet stores like Office Depot to see what they offer in your area.  But always compare prices from local and major chain options, so that you can get the best price possible.  Large format scanning can be expensive, so cost should be carefully weighed before making a final choice.
